ARTIST RESOURCES: WRITING ABOUT YOUR ART - A SHORT GUIDE

WRITING ABOUT YOUR ART - A SHORT GUIDE

When writing about your art, you will need to give an insight into your creative process, inspiration, and the meaning behind your work.

First and foremost: be honest and genuine.  Write an accurate reflection of your visual art, not selling yourself short -your work, and you have something important to say- and not trying to say what you think wants to be heard.  Your unique voice is valid and valuable.

Things to include:

  • Introduction
  • Artistic Approach
  • Medium and Techniques
  • Themes and Motivations
  • Process and Methodology
  • Influences and Inspirations
  • Intentions and Goals
  • Viewer Interaction
  • Exhibitions and Achievement
  • Conclusion

Some pointers:

  • Don’t be vague- include interesting details as well as overviews.
  • Regularly write about your work so that you can define your practice and it can feed your process.
  • Perhaps use text in your sketchbook-annotating your drawings and taking notes on your inspirations.
